Make Offers to Help

Though it might seem paradoxical, making offers to help others is actually a form of asking. If I offer to help you with your business plan, or offer to assist you with a birthday party for your child, I am asking your permission to enter into an agreement with you. It is important to be clear about the offers you are making and to affirm that your offer has been heard and accepted. It is also important to follow through appropriately on your offers. Making offers can be a way of moving toward a solution to a problem or creating a path or process that did not previously exist.

Practice making offers. Pay attention and mentally note the offers that you make. Notice any difficulty you may have making offers. Do you feel depleted or renewed by offering assistance? Occasionally, of course, both feelings may occur simultaneously, but focus on your dominant response. Would it be helpful to alter this typical response?
