Victor

Victor shrugged into the navy sports jacket Natasha had picked out for him and turned to see his reflection in the dressing room mirror. Although the jacket fit him well, it was more fashionable than his usual style. He glanced at the price tag and almost swallowed his tongue. This one piece of clothing cost more than anything he’d ever bought, besides his car. He carefully took it off and decided to stick to purchasing the non-skinny jeans he now wore. Becoming a millionaire didn’t mean he’d have to live like one. He might be shopping at a luxury department store in the heart of Union Square, but he was happy with a low-key lifestyle.

He had been enjoying living like the rich and famous for the past six days though. Being holed up in Silas’s condo hadn’t been as bad as he’d thought it would be. It sure beat following cheating husbands around the city. He couldn’t complain about his bodyguard duties. He had access to an unlimited number of TV channels, a beautiful view of the sunrise and sunset every day, and a selection of gourmet meals prepared daily by the building’s catering kitchen. Of course, Natasha’s company made the time go by faster as well.

They ate their meals together and talked about music, both classical pieces and current hits on the radio. Their afternoons were spent in the building’s gym or side by side on the couch reading or surfing the internet. They watched movies in the evening, sharing popcorn and candy like two teenagers on a date. Being with Natasha made him feel young and carefree again. Even shopping was fun as long as he could share the experience with her.

He realized he missed her presence already. He quickly gathered up the two other pairs of pants he’d chosen, along with a couple of shirts and essentials, and exited the stall. Walking along the wooden floors that reflected the bright lights overhead, he made his way to the jewelry section where Natasha said she’d be. He had hesitated to leave her out of his sight, but she’d reasoned that she was more than safe in a store with their own set of security guards. He had agreed, knowing there were multiple pairs of eyes on the lookout. Yet, he wouldn’t feel at peace until Natasha was within arm’s reach again.

He smiled at the thought of her in that crazy tiger print outfit she’d had on the other day. What was even crazier was the fact that he’d gone into Tony Tiger mode and said something so childish. The last time he’d done something that silly was when he played with his young niece and nephew. That had been years ago before he left the force and isolated himself from everyone, including his family. He couldn’t remember the last time his younger sister had called him or sent him pictures of the kids. He didn’t blame her though; communication required effort on both sides. Perhaps now was the time to put in that effort and reconnect with them.
