HOW IT WORKS

The food coloring tints the shells of the hard-boiled eggs, making them easy to identify and distinguish from raw eggs when stored in the refrigerator.

EGGISTENTIAL THOUGHTS

• If you’re all out of food coloring, adding 1 tablespoon of Tang orange drink mix, 1 teaspoon of Kool-Aid drink mix, or 1 teaspoon of Jell-O powder to the boiling water also tints the eggshells.

• Another way to color the shells of hard-boiled eggs so you can differentiate them from raw eggs in the refrigerator: mark the hard-boiled eggs with a brightly colored crayon, a pencil, or an indelible marker.

• If you neglected to mark the hard-boiled eggs, spin the eggs on the counter. Hard-boiled eggs spin smoothly. Raw eggs wobble.
