Rebecca’s grandmother died on Sunday morning, a week after she suffered the stroke and fell and bruised her arm but didn’t break it. We were at home in bed when it happened. Worst case, I was an accessory before the fact.

Most of the rest of the family was there when we arrived. Marvyl’s mouth was hanging open and I tried pushing it shut but the muscles were already stiff, so I held her chin cupped in my hand for a long time while the others told stories and laughed and cried and made the plans. I thought her mouth looked better when I let go, though it still hung open a gap. I figured the undertaker would fix that later but then I remembered Marvyl had wanted to be cremated.
