Conclusion

The argument of this Chapter, then, has been that Wertsch’s attempt to address the problem of developing Vygotsky’s approach to human mental functioning, and extending it to the wider processes characteristic of capitalist society by drawing on ‘Bakhtin’s contribution’, falls significantly short of his own objective. Moreover, his approach to these wider processes, and so to the whole question of development, seems static and somewhat contrary to Vygotsky’s most fundamental methodological precept. In turn, it has been argued that when we clarify the differences between the contributions of Bakhtin and Voloshinov, we find that the work of the latter provides a framework which would seem fer better placed to meet the objective which Wertsch is pursuing. It is inherently compatible with Vygotsky’s work, but also, particularly in Voloshinov’s theorization of the relationship between meanings and evaluation, highly compatible with Leont’ev’s attempt to extend and develop Vygotsky’s insights in Activity, Consciousness and Personality. Moreover, it takes the theorization of the relationship in question as one of its most basic tasks, and approaches this task in a completely dialectical way. Furthermore, in the theorization of speech genres and the dialectics of theme, meaning and evaluation, it provides tools for the analysis of language-use which are compatible with, but also significantly more developed than, those which it was possible to glean from the works of Vygotsky and Leont’ev. If we are to develop the ‘new theory of the psychology of consciousness’ (Vygotsky 1987a; 41) which Vygotsky’s work points to, but which is barely touched upon at the end of Thinking and Speech, then Voloshinov seems much better placed to act as our theoretical and methodological guide.
