Fifteen
At the top of the stairs, Bennett paused long enough to peek into Nathanâs room. There he was, sprawled out on his back in the middle of his empty room, staring at that ridiculous disco ball.
Bennett shook his head. At least this time he wasnât staring at his phone. âWeâre painting Gemmaâs room. How about helping?â
No response.
âNathan.â Bennett stepped into the tie-dyed space.
Nathan jerked his head toward Bennett and tugged an AirPod out of his ear. âWhat?â
âWeâre going to work in Gemmaâs room.â
âGood for you.â
âCome on, man. You canât just lie there all day while we work.â
âBet.â
Bennett blew out a long breath. âIs this how itâs going to be?â
âProbably. Unless you leave me alone.â
Was this a battle worth fighting? Bennett listened to the easy conversation happening in the room across the hall. Hunter had asked Gemma about her school in Chicago, and Gemma was prattling on about cheerleading and swim clubâthings that Bennett couldnât promise her when she started attending Elk County Public School.
That now-familiar weight pressed down in his chest. God, I donât think I can do this.
He focused on Nathan again. Let him be. More than likely heâd be more of a pain in the butt rather than a help anyway.
âEnjoy your disco ball, then.â Bennett turned and left the room.
âYou know I will.â
The response was likely intended to grate on Bennettâand held the strong possibility for success. But Bennett exhaled slowly, clenched and unclenched his fists, and chose to let it go.
Crossing the hall, Bennett found Hazel stirring a can of barely green paint called something Wisdomâwhich reminded Bennett to pray for exactly that. As he did so silently, he joined Hunter and Gemma at their washing-the-wall job, taking up a rag from a bucket of warm water as he went.
âCan I get a new duvet?â Gemma aimed her eager, winning expression at Bennett.
Yet again he was reminded of how often heâd used charm to get his way. Man, he was going to have to figure out how to curb this habit in Gemma. No one with such a sweet face should wield that much manipulation.
âWhatâs a duvet?â Hazel asked.
âItâs like a bedspread case.â Gemma folded her hands together, squishing her cleaning rag in between her palms. âPlease, Benji?â
âBennett.â
Gemma glanced at Hazelâlikely because the girl had heard the woman use Bennettâs forbidden nickname.
âAnd no, I donât think so. The moving truck should get here in a day or two, and weâll use what you had in Chicago.â
âBut my old room was pink.â
Bennett glanced at the bright pink on the walls. âThen maybe weâre wasting our time.â
âNot this color of pink.â Gemma wrinkled her nose. âSoft pink. Pretty pink.â
âWhat color is your bedding?â
A dusting of soft pink spread over her freckled face. âGray.â
âIâm fairly confident gray will work with Wise Owl green.â
âGentle Wisdom.â
Bennett shrugged. âExactly.â
Gemma produced that cute pouty lip along with a pair of pleading puppy eyes. Dang, but the kid was good at being adorable. Did it matter if he let her pick something new? It was all coming from Dadâs account anyway .
