Sanchez’s Magic Elixirs & PB&J

Traveling through the jungle—well wait, let me back up for a moment here. Once Sánchez arrived in Cancún and the journey began, I learned all about his “magic elixirs.” This became code for so many things, often food was an afterthought, and on a rare occasions, an accompaniment. We trekked through miles of Belizean jungle, took the dingiest of public busses, and somehow staggered our way to the unspoiled islands. The one thing that always remained with us was a bottle of rum and, on occasion, meager provisions. Back then there was no reality television or mobile phones; with the infancy of the internet we truly wrote the script for “Survivor.”

1 bottle of rum (always go local)

Some type of liquid to mix with rum (3 parts rum, 1 part whatever)

In a glass or empty Coke-a-Cola bottle pour in 3 parts rum, and add “whatever” is around. Stir liquids together with index finger in a circular motion. Allow liquid to stabilize before consuming. If a drinking glass is not around and you are embracing the coke bottle method, secure the soft part of your thumb above the small opening. SLOWLY invert the bottle for 10 seconds. Repeat 3 times.

Note: If using a carbonated liquid, slowly remove thumb allowing pressure to escape, otherwise there will be a large vertical eruption of liquid—forget about the mess, it’s more about not wasting the rum! Right Sanchez?
