Healthy Cooking

1. Grainy Goodness: Boost the fiber in your snacks by sticking with whole grain. You can find whole grain pretzels, tortillas, breads and cereals.

2. Specialty Snacks: Offer healthy snacks you and your family have never tried before. Avocado slices, seaweed chips, rice cakes, dried cranberries, jicama, goji berries and star fruit are choices worth trying.

3. Delicious Distraction: If you have a habit of grazing while you cook, chew gum while cooking. You’ll save calories by laying off the extras.

4. Fiber Is Fabulous: A lack of fiber in your diet can lead to many health prolems. To add daily fiber to your diet, prepare a salad packed with veggies and healthy grains for lunch.

5. Fight The Fat: Store canned broth in the refrigerator to cause the fat to solidify. When ready to use, punch 2 small holes on each end of the can top. When you pour the broth into a recipe, the fat will stay in the can.

6. Wild Thing: Wild rice is delicious and adds fiber to your meals. Cook wild rice until it expands and you can see the lighter portion of the interior grain. Don’t overcook.

7. Meal Geometry: Here’s a simple meal math tip. For a nutritious meal, your veggies should take up 1/2 of the plate. Your meat and grain/starch should each take up 1/4 of the plate.
