Afterward Ben was unable to say whether the pastor ever finished his prayer. He did not know if the sermon was completed, he did not know if the sun still shone. He did not know anything, in fact, except for what happened within his own private universe. For in that moment, everything changed. Everything.
It seemed as though a wind swept down from outside and inside at the same time. He did not know whether he imagined the external noise, but he did not think so. For it appeared that it blew in from the east, a rising storm that felled the people in the valley like sudden summer hail. The instant before he was struck himself, he could see them over to his right, wailing and shrieking and flailing about and falling over. Or so it seemed in the quick instant before he himself was struck.
He did not want to release himself to the experience. Part of his reluctance was terror. But mostly it was his background. The years of training had worked their way deep into his psyche. Ben gripped the wooden seat so hard he broke four fingernails. He strove to maintain focus upon the stage and the world about him. But it was hard. Oh yes. So very hard indeed.
Back in college Ben had worked a variety of construction jobs. His senior year he had obtained a commercial license and started driving a cement truck. His days had consisted of driving somewhere, then sitting and waiting while the contractor got ready for him to crank the levers and unload the wet cement. But the final hour of every shift had been the hardest work he had ever done. Harder even than the worst of his FBI basic training. Although the job had paid almost double anything else he was offered, he had lasted only three and a half months. For after unloading the cement and pulling back into the yard, Ben had been required to climb inside the round rear container. The hole though which the cement flowed was so tight Ben had been forced to slide in with one arm out in front and the other held tight to his middle. Once inside, a yard worker would pass in a pneumatic drill, a helmet, safety goggles, and the kind of heavily padded ear-protectors used by jet mechanics. The yard worker was always smirking when he did so. Ben then used the pneumatic drill to chip off all the cement that had dried and hardened around the inside of the revolving vessel. Otherwise the next shiftâs load would dry and clot faster. Every last bit of cement had to be turned to dust; otherwise the yard boss would fine him half a dayâs pay and force him to clean out another truck. Using the drill had been a dreadful experience. The cauldron fired back the noise and the vibration directly at Ben. It was not a noise he heard through his padded ears. The racket was so loud he felt it inside his entire body.
