When I started at CCL, I was hired by the vice president of research for a project he needed someone to staff. I was not competing with a slate of candidates for a posted position. I got my initial interviews through my network, was hired on contract for a specific project, and within six months was hired to be a full-time employee. Talk about imposter syndrome! The messages that went through my head were, “I was hired through the back door; there wasn’t even a position. I didn’t have to go through the same selection process that other researchers do.” On and on and on.
I have been exceedingly successful in my work, but the imposter syndrome followed me for many years—about 20, to be exact. But then I went through my first full selection process for the job I currently hold. Before that, I was promoted based on my strengths, accomplishments, and potential, yet still felt like an imposter until the first time I went through what I hadn’t experienced when I first joined—a competitive selection process. If my experience resonates with you, I encourage you to use some of the lessons in this chapter to crush your imposter syndrome and believe in yourself by seeing that others believe in you. Don’t let it take 20 years to be convinced that you are NOT an imposter!
