Webinars can be easier to put together than an entire five-week course. Most often you create a slide presentation and present it live using platforms like WebEx,39 GoToMeeting,40 or Adobe Connect.41 These platforms usually offer a live chat session for attendees and sometimes feature polls where your audience can weigh in on questions that you create. Many regional library associations offer a series of webinars to their local information professionals, and they provide the software platform for your presentations. It’s important to use a good-quality microphone when you present this way—it can make a huge difference in sound quality for the people attending. It’s also a good idea to find ways to make your presentation as interactive as possible, with specific questions for your audience in the live chat, and poll questions if they make sense for your topic. I’ve presented webinars on various technology topics, such as “Advancing Accessibility with Mobile Devices,” and “Organize Your Life with Mobile Apps.”42

Online teaching is popular these days, especially since many people don’t have large travel budgets for attending conferences. In addition, new platform providers for teaching your own courses online are appearing every year. One that gets good reviews is Teachable,43 which offers the possibility of hosting your courses under your own domain name. No matter what the platform, online teaching is a great opportunity to curate information for other information professionals and by doing so, keep yourself up to date.
