Chapter Four

Classical music played from somewhere in the room. Cello. Mostly cello. The soft drone teased my racing heartbeat to match its slow tempo.

For being an older, no-frills kind of house, the bathroom exceeded any expectation. The shower could easily fit two people in it. The tub I luxuriated in oozed opulence.

We were in a safe house, in Delaware. I tried to wrap my head around everything that had happened over the past few hours. It seemed so long ago Mina and I were on our way home from the movies. Her, laughing at me because of how badly I needed to use the bathroom. Me, complaining about every bump or sharp turn. Was that really earlier in the day?

I tracked Vaughn in the bedroom, by voice alone. He snapped directives at someone on the other end of that call.

Communications lockdown, he said. Then traces and something about SCIF and security breaches.

Why me? The question kept surfacing, despite my attempts to keep my mind blank. A break in. An attack in the parking lot. Now they had come to finish the job. My wrists still burned from the rope that had been twisted around them. I briefly wondered where they'd gone. I studied the abraded skin there, which validated my memory of them being there. My fingers continued to run over the angry skin, exploring the ridges formed as a result of me pulling against my bindings.

"Sorry." Vaughn knelt next to the tub, taking a cup from the floor. I watched as his hand dipped into the water, collecting the swirling liquid before running it over my hair. "I had a few phone calls to make."

The repeated swoosh and splash of the water over my head lulled me into a semi-meditative state, wrapping me in comforting silence.

"So you saw a movie, huh?"

The movies. It seemed like eons ago. That was why I had needed to use the bathroom so bad. Too much pop.

"We saw two of them."

Why did I giggle? What a strange response to a question.

"First, we saw a Nicholas Sparks movie. Then, because Mina didn't want to go home with an emotional hangover, we snuck into a Melissa McCarthy movie."

"Snuck in? As in you didn't pay for them?" Vaughn teased, leaving the cup to float in the water as he lathered his hands with shampoo. "You know you are incriminating yourself in a punishable act."

Tiny shards of glass. That's what shampoo against my scalp felt like. Even Vaughn's fingers glancing across the injured area shocked me with pain.

"I want to get this cleaned up," he said.

I could only nod, incapable of words while my vision dotted with little flashes of white light. Instead, I chose to focus on the red-tinged suds dropping into the water like bloody tears. I knew it was necessary. Who wants to sleep with a headful of matted blood? But shit, it hurt.

"Is it bad?" I asked.

"It's probably going to be tender for a few days. He got some of your hair all the way to the root.
