The next group of doctors looked for contagious diseases. Trachoma was a highly contagious eye infection that could cause blindness and death. During the peak of immigration, trachoma was common in Southern and Eastern Europe, but there were few cases in the United States, and the inspections tried to keep the disease out. The trachoma exam required that the examiner turns the immigrant's eyelid inside out to look for inflammation on the inner eyelid. This exam was a quick but harrowing experience because the medical inspectors used a button-hook to pull the eyelid back. Button-hooks were not a delicate instrument and were designed to lace up old-fashion shoes. They were not medical tools.
