Chapter 9
I caught the door when another couple were leaving the apartment building, and ran up the stairs eager to see Nika.
As I came down the hall toward her apartment, I could see her door was open, and I could hear yelling coming from inside. I recognized the voice and picked up the pace.
âDo you think I would ever let him marry you without a prenup? Do you think I would let you take half of everything Iâve helped him get? You stupid bitch! Who do you work for?â
âI donât know what youâre talking about!â she cried.
Christopher was yelling at Nika and had her up against the wall by her throat as I stormed into her apartment.
âChris!â I yelled and pulled him off her while Nika slid to the floor, gasping for air. I knelt by her side to check her over. âAre you okay?â I asked, touching her face. She nodded, still catching her breath as I turned on my former best friend. âWhat are you thinking?â I stood to face him.
âDonât be stupid, Jamie. Canât you see? She has no family, no ties to anything. Sheâs been unemployed for seven months, yet she can afford this apartment and that car! She asked you to take her for a tour of your plant. Sheâs Russian, for Christâs sake. Sheâs a spy, Jamie. Hello?â He said this like it was a fact.
I turned to Nika to make sure she was still okay. Her breathing had steadied, but she still looked scared as she got to her feet.
âGet out!â Turning back, I pointed toward the door as I hiked Christopher up and shoved him out of her apartment.
âJamie, you have to listen! Youâre an idiot if you marry her without a prenup!â
âGet out!â I said again and closed the door in his face. I didnât have to listen to anything. He was an asshole. I turned to Nika who was watching me intently. âIâm sorry about him,â I said. âI donât know what he is thinking.â
âI think he is thinking Iâm a spy.â She rubbed her throat. âDo you have that problem often?â
âI guess there is the potential for such a thing.â I shrugged.
She seemed to interpret my answer as that I was doubting her.
âIâm really not a spy, I swear!â Her eyes opened wide.
âI know.â
âI can explain the money. Look.â She walked into her other room and opened the drawer to a filing cabinet.
âNika, itâs fine. I believe you,â I said quickly.
âBut I want to show you. I do work on the side. See?â She handed me her tax documents from last year. She pointed at the line for other income. âFreelancingâ was written on the line as the description.
I laughed awkwardly. âI donât need to see this to trust you. I trust you.â
âYou do?â she asked incredulously. âWhy?â
âI donât know, but I do.â I handed her papers back to her. âYou donât seem very spy-like anyway.â I smiled and inspected the marks on her neck, kissing them softly. âSo
