Chapter 9

I caught the door when another couple were leaving the apartment building, and ran up the stairs eager to see Nika.

As I came down the hall toward her apartment, I could see her door was open, and I could hear yelling coming from inside. I recognized the voice and picked up the pace.

“Do you think I would ever let him marry you without a prenup? Do you think I would let you take half of everything I’ve helped him get? You stupid bitch! Who do you work for?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” she cried.

Christopher was yelling at Nika and had her up against the wall by her throat as I stormed into her apartment.

“Chris!” I yelled and pulled him off her while Nika slid to the floor, gasping for air. I knelt by her side to check her over. “Are you okay?” I asked, touching her face. She nodded, still catching her breath as I turned on my former best friend. “What are you thinking?” I stood to face him.

“Don’t be stupid, Jamie. Can’t you see? She has no family, no ties to anything. She’s been unemployed for seven months, yet she can afford this apartment and that car! She asked you to take her for a tour of your plant. She’s Russian, for Christ’s sake. She’s a spy, Jamie. Hello?” He said this like it was a fact.

I turned to Nika to make sure she was still okay. Her breathing had steadied, but she still looked scared as she got to her feet.

“Get out!” Turning back, I pointed toward the door as I hiked Christopher up and shoved him out of her apartment.

“Jamie, you have to listen! You’re an idiot if you marry her without a prenup!”

“Get out!” I said again and closed the door in his face. I didn’t have to listen to anything. He was an asshole. I turned to Nika who was watching me intently. “I’m sorry about him,” I said. “I don’t know what he is thinking.”

“I think he is thinking I’m a spy.” She rubbed her throat. “Do you have that problem often?”

“I guess there is the potential for such a thing.” I shrugged.

She seemed to interpret my answer as that I was doubting her.

“I’m really not a spy, I swear!” Her eyes opened wide.

“I know.”

“I can explain the money. Look.” She walked into her other room and opened the drawer to a filing cabinet.

“Nika, it’s fine. I believe you,” I said quickly.

“But I want to show you. I do work on the side. See?” She handed me her tax documents from last year. She pointed at the line for other income. “Freelancing” was written on the line as the description.

I laughed awkwardly. “I don’t need to see this to trust you. I trust you.”

“You do?” she asked incredulously. “Why?”

“I don’t know, but I do.” I handed her papers back to her. “You don’t seem very spy-like anyway.” I smiled and inspected the marks on her neck, kissing them softly. “So
