Cape Canaveral has long been the name of the peninsula that extends south from Merritt Island and east of the Banana River. (Its name was changed to Cape Kennedy after the president’s 1963 assassination but was changed back to Canaveral in 1973.) It’s the site of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, where the earliest experimental American military rockets were launched. Kennedy Space Center 1 [map] (State Road 405, Merritt Island; tel: 855-433-4210; www.kennedyspacecenter.com; daily from 9am; center may be partially or completely closed on launch days), including the launch pads for rocket launches, is on Merritt Island. It lies within the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Although the space center is a government facility, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is operated by a private company without the benefit of taxpayer funds. The complex sprawls across a landscaped campus, incorporating nearly a dozen buildings and several outdoor exhibits.
