Zona Cafetera

East of Bogotá and south of Medellín, there lies rolling green hills and high altitude mountains that enjoy a tropical climate, making this area the premier coffee-growing region of Colombia.

Parque Nacional Los Nevados

Collectively the departments of Risaralda, Caldas, and Quindío make up what is known as the axis of the Zona Cafetera – the region where Colombia’s world-renowned coffee is produced. The notion of this area being ground zero for bean production can be perplexing at first. There are towns and cities here, such as Manizales, located at an altitude of well over 2,000 meters (6,500ft). Yet the Zona Cafetera enjoys a tropical climate, making the sharp and steep mountains that cut through the region perfect for coffee cultivation. The landscapes here are lush and green, outshining even the rich green valleys and rolling hills of Antioquia, giving the area a Middle Earth look.
