Du Mont (1986, 491) continued her discussion by recounting the history of the Hampton Library School, which was established in 1925 for the purpose of separately training “Negro” librarians. An example of the “legalized segregation in the south”—the Hampton Library School—served a great purpose as many other library programs would not, or could not depending on geography, admit students of color. Some programs were clear in their own prejudice, stating that it would be “far better to send students to Hampton rather than urge them to come to other institutions where their presence is a distinct embarrassment” (492).

A significant division existed in the library education and professionalization of librarians of color, and, subsequently, there were fissures and blatant omissions in services provided to blacks and other communities of color.
