Chapter fifteen

Nat

"It's been almost four weeks Nat. Chief's gonna go ballistic when he finds out." Gia warns. I see the cracks in her resolve. It's killing her that she can't say anything to anyone and she's more on edge than usual whenever the issue of dating comes up.

"Stop saying that. No, he's not, because Uncle Johnny is never going to find out. We all agreed to keep our mouths shut and Taylor and I are taking care of this. I just need a few more days."

"I hear you Nat, but you know how he is. Chief Devane has this way of getting the truth out of you."

“Gianna, this truth you better hold as if your life depends on it. As soon as I get a break from this case, I'll take care of the annulment paperwork. I just need you to stay strong and have my back for a little while longer.”

"Girlie. I always have your back. You know that."

As friends go, she's a great one to have, but as a kid, she was a bit of a tattletale. Nic and I had to keep coming up with ways to bribe her to keep quiet and even then we got in trouble cause she couldn't do it for long. I'm nervous that she might spill the details. Even after all this time, I'm not sure how much residual snitching remains in her DNA.

"Thanks, Gia. I'll fix this. I swear."

"Okay. You'd better. Because if you don't, it's not just my ass that's in a sling."

I look over to the table housing my accomplices/ wedding guests. They're all taking a risk helping me keep this from Uncle Johnny. I need to double down on work so I can carve out a few days and walk this paperwork through. It would probably be easier to file in Seattle or New York, but I don't want to send it through the usual channels, because I'm trying to limit the number of extra hands touching this. The more people that see the papework, the bigger the chance that the truth will get out.

We're at O'Malley's to support Karaoke night. Gia and I grab our drinks from the bar and join our friends. Kelley makes room in the booth so I can sit next to him. He dips his head and says, "Thought you were over there avoiding me."

"Why would I be doing that?" I lean closer and take a sniff. "You showered so there aren't any offensives odors rolling off of you today." Not that there ever are. He always smells good enough to lick and nibble.

"I guess maybe I thought after the other day."

When he so selflessly offered to kiss me. "It's all good."

"Yeah?"

"Of course."

Randall is watching our exchange. He's always been dad and Uncle Johnny's eyes and ears. I don't need him sniffing around the truth like a bloodhound. "What are the two of you whispering about over there?"

"Kelley letting me borrow his car tomorrow because the rental company has to put mine in the shop.
