“You know, I really wanted to take you to dinner before we have to go back to work and leave our bubble, Peaches.”

“I know, but I’m so tired, and my hair's a mess, Spencer,” she said, picking up her still damp strands as we laid in front of the fireplace.

“I think you look fucking gorgeous.”

And she did. The fire in the room, although not sweltering, cast a gentle light in the living space as we sat there eating our leftover chinese from lunch.

“Tell me something, Peaches,” I said, “When did you start having a crush on me?

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, seriously. I wanna know. I mean I know I’m damn good looking, but when did you know you wanted to bone me?”

God, her laugh would kill me.

“You’re so bad, and I’m not answering you,” she said, putting down her chopsticks and crossing her arms over her chest in mock anger.

“Please,” I begged, pushing out my lips and rounding my eyes.

“I gotta learn how to say no to you,” she laughed again, picking up her sticks and resuming her meal. “I think I was nine. You came to one of my dance recitals, wearing that ridiculous leather coat with your hair slicked back. All the other girls in the dance kept peeking around the corner and talking about the cute guy, and when I realized they were talking about you, I laughed at them.”

“Cut me to the quick, Peaches,” I said, stabbing my chopsticks into my heart.

“I’m not done yet, jerk. Anyway, after the recital, when you came over and gave me the flowers from your dad, all the girls got jealous, and I just remember thinking that you were kinda cute, even if you were mean to me. So, after that, I started doing what a nine year old thinks flirting is,” she shrugged, slurping a low mein noodle between her lips.

“Tell me, I don’t remember,” I asked, fully entranced with the way her mouth moved as she spoke. I knew what she did back then, and at seventeen, it had annoyed the shit out of me, now, I thought differently.

“Well, it was really stupid. I left my favorite teddy bear on your bed as a gift, but I never saw it again, and then, I don’t know, I started following you around everywhere, hoping you would notice me. I put flowers all over your car once, although, now that I think about it, I think they were weeds. God, this is so embarrassing.”

“No, it’s not. I love it,” I said, leaning in, capturing her lips in a tender kiss. “And, yes. They were weeds.”

“You’re an ass!” she said, swatting my shoulder.

“An ass you love?”

“An ass I love,” she sighed.

“One sec,” I said, standing abruptly, watching the heat return to her eyes at my low hanging pajama bottoms. “Keep it in your pants, Peaches,” I said, before scurrying off into my room.

Sifting through the closet, I vaguely remembered it being the last place I saw it. All of my stuff had been stored here when I had gone to Europe, so it had to be here.
