Following the publication of these surveys the Tanzanian government decided to take action to change the situation, by putting in place a range of initiatives, including the enactment of new laws, investments in education, school transport and dissemination of information on the gravity of the problem in order to help rural populations understand the damages caused by early marriage, instead of considering it a solution to overcome their difficulties.

A step forward and the praise of the UN

In Tanzania it began with popular petitions, to continue with pressure from the associations together with educational and cultural institutions moving towards an awareness raising plan by local government. Until a resolution was obtained against female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage.

The Tanzanian government institutions earned the praise of the United Nations, expressed by the spokeswoman Hoyce Temu, in February 2016, in Dar es Salam.

This outcome was also the result of numerous petitions organised around the country on several occasions, including the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, on the 6 February 2016.
