Aconite should be thought of whenever there is a sudden and violent onset of pain with fever. Accompanying the pain and fever there may be considerable restlessness, both physical and mental. These two symptomsâ physical and mental restlessness âare the most characteristic of aconite. Aconite is generally the first remedy to consider in any sudden inflammatory condition. Aconite is a quick and brief-acting remedy and is useful only in the very early stages of acute inflammatory conditions.
Belladonna most often exhibits the Keynote symptoms of middle ear infection. The eardrum is congested with blood vessels and is bright red, and the eardrum itself bulges outward from the pressure behind it. There will be considerable tearing pain in the affected ear, with throbbing or beating pains deep within the ear. Through experience, belladonna has proved itself almost specific in middle ear inflammations, frequently bringing about a complete and rapid cure.
A valuable combination remedy in middle ear infection is ABC âthe homeopathic combination of Aconite, Belladonna, and Chamomilla. Generally available from homeopathic suppliers in the 6x potency, ABC will act quickly in most acute middle ear conditions. In using the lower potency of ABC or any single remedy, increase the recommended dosage on the label to every 2 hours. In the higher 30x potency, administer the remedy every 2 to 4 hours for a maximum dosage of nine applications.
Another homeopathic remedy is often employed in the treatment of acute middle ear infection, Heparsulph.y and a number of pre-prepared combination remedy specialties contain it. It is advisable for the first-aider or medical self-helper not to use Hepar sulph. in treating a middle ear condition. Hepar sulph. tends to increase suppuration and may act so strongly as to rupture the eardrum! A ruptured eardrum is a medical emergency and may lead to complications. The first-aider will recall the first principle for first aid from the Introduction: to do no harm. The use of Hepar sulph. in ear inflammations is best left to the skilled homeopathic practitioner.
EXTERNAL EAR OBSTRUCTIONS
Mechanical obstructions of the outer ear are not uncommon, especially in small children who have a bad habit of inserting any object that fits into their ears. These objects range from dried peas and beans to beads from a broken necklace. Obstructions in the ears of adults most frequently result from an accumulation of wax in the canal.
