Yasmine’s face twitches a glare.

She rarely likes when anyone corrects her, let alone a child.

“Up,” my instruction is given after I’m on an empty one beside her.

“No.”

“My rock is super high!” Lidia exclaims.

“Wanna switch rocks with her?” I playfully push.

Something similar to a gargle and a growl escapes my woman during her positioning on the stone.

As soon as she’s there, Lanie demonstrates the basic move for us.

It isn’t simple, nor do we look graceful in our pursuit to complete it. There’s laughter out of them. Laughter out of us. Near splash collision and GIF worthy flailing. Conversation flows freely between everyone. Yasmine interrogates my past dealings with strange behaviors in creeks, while the kids recall memories, some happy, some not, around their previous experiences near similar bodies of water. They let down their guards for me. For her. They allow their true selves to shine bright rather than hide as they’ve become accustomed to.
