As Ragnall and Slaine rode off in the direction the old man had indicated, Slaine said, “I can see now why you were inspired to leave the life of a robber behind you. Mulcahey did, and he seems to be doing well for himself.”

“Aye, I’ve always thought it would be nice to end up as he has,” Ragnall remarked. “Enjoying my final years in peace. Tending a garden and helping things to grow rather than die. He even found himself a wife, one who knew all of his previous dark deeds and somehow managed to love him anyway.”

“So it is possible for that to happen,” she observed.

“Such things are rare enough that I would not dare to hope for the same for myself.”

There was that hard edge to his voice again, that unwillingness to forgive himself for the things he had done.

Was that his true nature? Would he always keep people at arm’s length for fear they might be scandalized by the truth of him, and live alone with the regrets of his past life?

She couldn’t help but wonder.

“What happened to his wife?” she inquired.

“She took ill several years ago. He knew a bit of healing. You’d be surprised, I think, by how many in our line of work are forced to learn such things to deal with our occupational hazards. Sadly, it was still not enough to save her.” He sighed. “It’s a dreadful thing, really. He could have fought off an entire army to save her life. He would have if it came to that. He was the fiercest and most skilled warrior I ever knew, and even at the age you see him now, he remains one of the most formidable fellows in all the land. But his sword and bow and dagger were useless against the fever that took her.”

“I am sorry to hear it,” she said quietly. “I believe even bandits deserve to spend their final years in happiness and peace.”

He made no reply, just rode faster, forcing her to hurry to keep up.
