Chapter Eleven
Oliver woke to the sound of a baby wailing, the noise like sandpaper on a raw, open wound. He blinked, momentarily forgetting where they were. The sight of a blue, velvet seat in front of him brought his brain back into line and he sighed out his relief. He wasn’t having a dream where the voice of a child called to him—Christ, he didn’t think he could bear that if it happened. They were on the plane, on their way back home.
And thank God for that.
He glanced across at Langham, who smiled, bleary-eyed but clearly happy to be where they were. The past hours had taken a serious toll on both of them. Their need to get away for a break had seemed great at the time, but the need to return to what they’d wanted to run away from was far greater.
Funny how things turn out. How the grass seems greener on the other side, yet it isn’t. What is it people say? The grass isn’t greener. If you just spend more time watering your own, yours will become greener too.
They hadn’t needed to go on holiday to get where they wanted to be. To try new things in the bedroom. To get a break. They could have just switched their bloody phones off and fucked at home. Yeah, the idea of a new place, somewhere no one knew them, might have lent an air of extra excitement, but being paddled on the arse would have felt exactly the same wherever they’d practiced it.
And what the fuck kind of holidays had they been, anyway? The time in Marsh Vines had ended up being a nightmare, as had the Caribbean town. Oliver shuddered at the memories barging into his mind. That Caribbean town was a total fuck-up, the people ruled by a nutter—albeit one with a terribly sad past. What must it be like to live in fear, to have to obey some bloke who’d just decided he’d be the king? The scant time Oliver had spent there was enough for him. No chance could he manage a whole lifetime in that place. Then again, it was what the residents were used to. If they’d always lived that way, it was all they knew. Oliver supposed, because he and Langham knew different, had been raised in a better place, the disparity between their lives had been highly apparent. Startling. Weird. Not right.
Langham smiled sleepily and passed him a mint. “Got it off the air hostess.”
Oliver popped it into his mouth, thankful for the taste of it instead of the sourness on his tongue that naps brought. He looked around. Most of the other passengers that he could see were flat out, snoring away, their mouths hanging open, but if that baby kept crying, it wouldn’t be long before everyone was jarred awake.
“I need to piss,” Oliver said.
“Me too.”
They rose, Oliver leading the way down the aisle toward the toilets. There were two next to one another, and as Oliver went inside one and turned to close the door, Langham placed his foot beside the jamb.
