“Right now she’s safe.” Almost in a whisper he added,

“What if we put her in danger? What if we unknowingly led

Rob to her? Then what would we do?”

She wouldn’t be able to go on. That’s what would happen.

Thoroughly defeated, Meredith stared at the speaker

phone. “What are you suggesting?”

Calvin erased Anna’s recording. “Let’s begin to think offen-

sively. There must be someone we know who will either work

around Rob Peterson or not be intimidated by the man.”

The recorder beeped, letting them know the erasure was

successful. Hearing that made it feel as if they were losing

Anna all over again. “Anything else?” she asked.

“Well . . . is there anyone we could trust to go to the

Brennemans’ for us and relay a message? Anyone who Rob

wouldn’t be suspicious of and follow?”

That was a good idea. It was just too bad that everyone

she was thinking of couldn’t be completely trusted to either

keep her silence or not get involved. Or, they were in such

poor health that Meredith was reluctant to involve them in

something so potentially dangerous. “I can’t think of anyone

off the top of my head.”

He reached out for her again, asking without words to

trust him. To have faith. “I just had an idea.”

“Who?”

“Beverly Lowrey.”

“Beverly? She must be almost seventy years old!”

For the first time during their conversation, Calvin

grinned. “We both know Beverly would have your head if

she heard you describe her as too old for anything.”

“She’s too old for this. We can’t put her in danger.”

“But what if she makes that choice on her own? She’s one
