Bisley: A sought-after village

The Cotswolds are often referred to as ‘Notting Hill with Wellies’, a reference to the number of folk who have moved here from London, or have second homes in the area. One of these is the author, dog lover and all-round good egg, Jilly Cooper. She moved to Bisley from Putney 30 years ago when she was writing her book Riders, which was set in the world of show jumping. She thought the Cotswolds would inspire her more than Putney Common. Jilly says that the villagers were very welcoming and looked after her when she first arrived. Some local people were terribly grand: ‘You didn’t ask any man what he did for a living,’ says Jilly, ‘he never did anything’. Grandest of all are members of the Royal Family: the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, Princess and Prince Michael of Kent and Princess Anne all live in adjacent villages.

Many TV personalities, actors, models and musicians, attracted by the beautiful homes and picturesque landscape, have also swapped their metropolitan existences for country life. David Beckham has been seen in the village and the actor Jamie Dornan who starred in Fifty Shades of Grey has also moved in. It looks like this once-rural community will keep its glamorous profile for a good while longer.
