Chapter Two

Bay glanced again at the white-and-green sign that swung in the wind. How had she not known David had a commercial nursery only four miles from her? She’d thought she knew all of the local growers. She and Joshua had checked out the greenhouses and nurseries in their immediate area before starting their own business two years ago.

Thunder rumbled, followed by a crack of lightning that zigzagged across the sky, and she began walking again. David walked on the other side of Sassafras but didn’t attempt to take the horse’s halter. Most men, even her stepbrothers, would have insisted it was a man’s job. The idea that David thought she was capable of leading her own horse in a thunderstorm intrigued her. Was it just because he was an Englisher, and it was their way? She didn’t know many English men.

“Have you been in Kent County long?” she asked, the sound of Sassafras’s horseshoes clanging on his paved driveway.

“Nope.” David flipped up the collar of his corduroy coat that was wet with rain. “I moved here from Wisconsin just after Christmas. Had a nursery business there, too.”

She nodded, trying to ignore how cold she was all of a sudden. She supposed the shock of the accident and her concern for the safety of the mare had kept her from feeling the temperature dropping, but now that she no longer had adrenaline rushing through her body, she was shivering. “We’ve got good soil in the area.” Her gaze flicked to his as she wondered how old he was. Older than her, for sure. Maybe thirty? And handsome.

But also an Englisher, she reminded herself.

And more likely than not, he was married.

She was surprised at her thoughts. She never considered men that way. More fuel for her mother’s concern she would end up an old maid.

She glanced at David. He had a strong jaw and was clean-shaven. He was a redhead with blue eyes. “I imagine you had good soil back in Wisconsin, too, but we have a milder climate here. And a longer growing season.” She chuckled. “My family moved here from upstate New York a few years ago. We used to shovel a lot of snow.”

David grinned, nodding. “Definitely a milder climate here. And I have to say, I didn’t miss having to shovel my way to the barn in January and February.”

The rain began to fall harder, and Bay walked faster. Stealing another glance at David over the mare’s back, she reached out and stroked the horse’s flank. “Good girl. Almost there. You’ll be inside, warm and safe, soon enough. Not a great day to be out,” she directed toward David. “I was headed to the new feedstore over in Seven Poplars—Faulkner’s. You know it?”

He met her gaze, and she felt the strangest sensation, something like a tickle at the nape of her neck. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it was definitely unfamiliar.

“I do know Faulkner’s. I like them as well as Clark’s.” He slid his hands into his coat pockets; he looked as cold as she felt.
