Chapter 6

Candi noticed Zack’s frozen expression. Had she said something wrong?

“What’s wrong?” she asked, concerned.

“Did you say Jeremie?” Zack asked. “Stu Jeremie?”

“Yes, why? Oh, no.” She closed her eyes and shook her head in dismay. “Please don’t tell me you know him.”

“Well, you could say that our paths have crossed before. Our families are not exactly bosom buddies.”

“Oh, no.”

“I guess you could say his brother, Ace...” Zack paused for a moment, and swallowed hard. “...stole my ex-fiancée from me.”

Her eyes widened in shock, her lips forming a perfect O.

“What?” she said, horrified.

“It’s water under the bridge now,” Zack replied, trying to play it cool, “It’s in the past, but that’s what went down.”

“Oh, Zack. I’m so sorry to hear that. How terrible for you.”

“I’m not going to lie; it did affect me when she left me. I was crushed when it first happened.”

“How did you find out?”

“I was just finished touring with a celebrity, working as a bodyguard out of the country.”

“Wow, I didn’t realize you worked internationally too.”

“It depends. Many of the celebs I worked with preferred to carry their own staff when touring overseas. Not that they didn’t trust international help, but they just felt comfortable with their own crew, wherever they went.”

“That makes sense,” she said.

Candi didn’t realize how complicated it was travelling with a security team. She hadn’t had the honor of traveling and touring internationally, not just yet anyway. And she certainly wasn’t on the level to have her own security detail.

“So my tour finished early but I didn’t call Zelda to tell her. I just wanted to surprise her. I know she’d been lonely while I went away on my tours, but I was planning on making it up to her. Anyway, when I got home...she was at my place...with him.”

“Oh, no.”

“Yeah, I guess we were all surprised.” He looked off into the distance. “But that’s how it goes. I said I’d never trust again.”

“I know it must have hurt, Zack, but don’t give up so easily. I mean, not all partners are like that.”

“I know, but I just thought it’s so hard to know what’s going on in someone’s heart that I wasn’t going to bother again.”

She looked away, not sure of what to say next.

“So, is that why you gave up bodyguarding?”

“I guess you could say that was a turning point. I blamed myself. And I guess I wanted to blame someone else so I blamed Ace too. I started taking less assignments. But then I guess the Lord had something else for me to do too, because it was around that time that my father fell ill from old age and couldn’t cope with the ranch any longer. So my brothers and I moved back here to help him out.”

“That was so sweet of you all.”

“My father was an amazing soul. He’d give his heart to anyone. He was always there for us and for all those who knew him. It wasn’t a hard decision to come back to help him out just as he’d helped us out.
