Josiah went back into the room and sat down beside his sleeping sister. He took Josie’s hand, noticing how skinny it felt inside his bigger one. Her skin seemed to droop around her. She’d always been healthy before, robust and all girl. Now she’d become a shell of herself.

Josie moaned in her sleep, her head moving as if she were denying something. How he wanted to take away all of her pain.

She let out a soft cry and then opened her eyes wide.

“Josiah?”

He heard the plea in his name.

“I’m here, Josie. I’m here,” he said, his hand squeezing hers. “It will be all right now.”

A single tear fell down her face and she looked away, out the window toward the hills. “It’s fall.”

“Ja, did you not remember?”

“I don’t remember a lot of things,” she admitted.

Then she went back to sleep.

Josiah held her hand, his head down while he prayed. Not knowing what to pray for, he only asked God to guide him. He had to take her home and nurture her and watch over her. He wouldn’t let her out of his sight this time.

He had other concerns now, however.

His sister had a baby out of wedlock and then left that baby abandoned on a porch.

Would the Campton Creek Amish community accept her with open arms or would they shun her and make her life hard to bear?

He knew his people back in Ohio wouldn’t want her there.

But what about the people here? They had once belonged to the Campton Creek community. He’d have to clear all of this with the bishop, of course. Josie would have to confess before the church and turn her life back over to God.

Was that why she’d come back here? Was that why she’d called out for him? Would the community shun her?

So many questions. If she couldn’t live among the Amish here, he’d have no choice but to take her away. Again.

So he prayed and sat with her, talking gently about all he’d done to the house and how kind the neighbors had been, until the nurses came in and told him he’d have to leave. The sun was setting over the trees and hills.

“I’ll come back tomorrow,” he said to her, over and over. “I won’t leave you again.”

Giving her a gentle kiss on the forehead, Josiah turned to the nurse. “You will let me know if anything happens, if she has a change?”

“Yes. I promise.” She took the number to the hat shop, smiling and nodding her head. “I’m familiar with the Bawell shop. Such a nice place. I shop there for Christmas and birthdays a lot.”

“I’m renting from them,” he explained. “I can be reached through that number and the one at the Campton Center.”

“We’ll put that information in her charts,” the nurse replied. “Go home and rest, same as your sister. She needs that more than anything else right now.”

“Will she be all right?” he asked as they walked to the door together.

“In time, I hope,” the nurse said.
