Make a Magic Box

Every magician needs a Magic Box, one of the earliest inventions in the field of magic. Performers have used the same technique to make magic baskets, hats, bags—any sort of container. You’ll use it to surprise viewers with your ability to pull something out of the empty box.

MATERIALS

2 half-gallon cardboard milk cartons or similar boxes

Scissors

Black tempera paint (add a few drops of dishwashing soap to make the paint stick to the slick carton surface)

Paintbrush

Tape or glue

Brightly colored gift wrap paper

Cut one carton down to a height of about 6 inches (A). From the remaining carton, cut one of the side sections apart and trim it to 7 inches (B). Paint the inside of the carton and both sides of the flap completely with black paint. Let dry. Fold under 1 inch on one end of the flap. Use glue or tape to fasten it to the inside bottom of the carton. Position it in the center of the bottom (C). Cover the outside of the carton with another color of paint, or glue on brightly colored wrapping paper.

Use the box to perform tricks by hiding items behind one side of the flap, holding it in place with your fingers as you hold the box up for the audience to see there is nothing inside (D). Then slide the flap open and pull out a silk scarf or other hidden item (E).

A white rabbit? Well, maybe!
