CHAPTER NINE
Dylan did more than follow her. Much more.
In her nervousness over getting herself ready to swim, Marielle had forgotten that Dylan would have to do the same thing to himself. So after she splashed her way into the dancing creek water, after she sucked in a breath at the refreshing coolness of it all, after she felt her myriad lacy underclothes instantly get soaked and swirl all around her...well, after all that, Marielle dashed the water drops from her eyes and glanced again to the creek bankâonly to get the surprise of her life.
Because Dylan had been wrong. Heâd said he was practically wearing two pairs of britches earlier. But the overall effect, as he stepped out of his trousers and dropped them to mingle, scandalously, with her own discarded dress, was much more remarkable and revealing than his description had implied.
Dylan was built much differently from her, Marielle realized anew as he headed toward her. He had a muscular torso, of course. He was also lightly hairy where she was not. He moved with a certain prowess that could never be applied to her, too.
There was more to it than that, though. Because sheâd never seen anything quite as provocative as the way his dark cotton drawers clung to his hip bones and then scandalously dipped just a bit lower than was strictly proper, making her realize that the chest hair he sported really did swirl all the way down.
All the way down...to that most compelling and personal part of himâthat part that sheâd never directly seen but had certainly wondered a great deal about while theyâd been kissing.
Transfixed by the sight of him, Marielle ducked shoulder-deep into the water and then went right on looking. Dylan came closer to the creekâs edge, not hurrying so much as parading for her benefit, and she would have smiled if not for the rousing effect his near nudity had on her. She couldnât believe how hard he looked, how strong, how utterly capable and undeniably good. His legs were long and lean, his hips spare, his pelvisâ
Shocked, Marielle swerved away her gaze. She had no business looking at him there. Did she? Theyâd kissed, yes. But that didnât mean she was at liberty to scrutinize the buttons on his drawers, to wonder about the bulk of him beneath, to almost squeal over the way that certain parts of him seemed almost to sway in a very mesmerizing fashion as he got closer. Did it?
She could have sworn she caught a glimpse of that most scandalous part of him, outlined clearly beneath his drawers. Her heart hammered at the immensity of what she was doing.
They were both almost naked. And heâd almost reached her.
When he did, though, Marielleâs concerns vanished like eddies of creek water moving happily downstream. Because in the moment between reaching the creek and reaching her, Dylan became more than the sum of manliness and muscles and imposing strength. He became, once again, the man she knew and cared so much for.
