CHAPTER 25

The 1918 ’Flu Epidemic

The influenza pandemic that spread across the world between 1918 and 1919 is estimated to have claimed the lives of between 50 to 100 million people.

Battery Sergeant Major R. Currie who was stationed at Coalhouse Fort, died of ’flu on 27 November 1918, followed six days later by his wife Daisy Alice Currie who passed away on 2 December 1918, yet another victim of the ’flu. They were buried in the nearby churchyard at St Catherine’s Church which is situated immediately outside of Coalhouse Fort. Sergeant Major Currie’s grave is today marked with a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone; what makes it somewhat unusual is the fact that the name of his wife, Daisy Ann, is also inscribed on it.

The war had touched most people throughout the country, either directly or indirectly. There weren’t many families who had a son that went off to fight in the war, who didn’t experience the pain of either losing a loved one or having one return damaged physically or mentally. For these same communities to then have to deal with further losses due to the ’flu pandemic, must surely have made many question their faith and Christian beliefs.
