WHAT YOU NEED:

football field

calculator

pedometer (optional)

long measuring tape

What You Do

An acre is 43,560 square feet (ft2). To give you an idea of what an acre looks like, go to a football field.

Stand on the ten-yard line. The distance to the opposite goal line times the width of the field is an area of approximately one acre.

Try to imagine 160 times that area. That area was the land given to a settler by the Homestead Act. Using a calculator, calculate the number of square feet in 160 acres.

The government land was divided into square lots. What is the length of a 160-acre lot?

If you have a pedometer and a long measuring tape, find the distance you go with each step. Then walk the length of a square 160-acre lot. How many of your steps equal the length of a square 160-acre lot?

How long and how wide is a 160-acre lot in miles?
