Chapter Twelve

Charlie shifted uncomfortably in the chair that, supposedly, turned into a bed for him to sleep on when the time came. Lindsey slept in the hospital bed, worn out from the surgery and still feeling the effects of the anesthesia. At least that’s what the doctors said. The IV in her arm also had morphine running through it. She looked... weird. Her color was off somehow. Not abnormal, according to the nurse, but still disconcerting.

His book sat unopened on his lap. He’d tried to read during surgery, but to no avail. He couldn’t concentrate on the words swimming in front of his eyes while some doctor looked at his daughter’s insides.

“Daddy?”

He looked over to see Lindsey’s eyes slowly blinking open before closing again. “I’m right here, princess.”

A tear leaked out of her eye. He watched it until it disappeared in her hair. What he wouldn’t give to make it easier on her. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?” He squeezed her hand. “I’m just glad you’re okay.”

“I know we can’t afford this. I don’t know who I was near who got me so sick, but I’m sorry.”

Charlie stood and turned until he sat on the edge of the bed, careful to avoid hurting her. “Linds.” Her eyes stayed closed. “Look at me, sweetheart.”

The lashes fluttered and eyes opened. The tears broke Charlie’s heart. Her tender spirit was one of the things he loved the most about her, but it also made him worry, especially as she got older. He feared her heart would break more easily than most and he’d spend more time than he cared to think about drying her tears.

He raised her hand until he could kiss the back of it. “Your appendix ruptured. Nothing anyone could have done about it. It’ll be fine. Don’t worry about it. We have insurance for a reason.” The bill would still be astronomical on his budget but there was nothing he could do about it except pray for a job to come through after graduation.

Lindsey looked around the room as much as she could without moving. “Where’s Addie?”

“She stayed until surgery ended but she has a project due this week for one of her classes. She’ll be back later.”

“You really like her, don’t you, Dad?”

Charlie did his best to school his features and not show his true feelings. “I like her a lot, punkin, but she’s moving in a few months.”

“We could move, too. I’d like to live in Europe near Grandma and Grandpa.”

It took everything in him not to squish her dreams completely. “I promise I’ll think about it, but don’t get your hopes up.”

A nurse chose that moment to walk in, giving him a bit of a reprieve. “Hi there, Lindsey. Let’s take a look at you, okay?”

Lindsey nodded and Charlie moved out of the way, watching as the nurse checked vital signs and peeked at her abdomen. “Everything looks good.” She patted Lindsey’s shoulder. “I’ll be back in a little while. Mr. Brewer, dinner will be here in a bit. Lindsey can have some clear fluids but that’s it for now.
