Kicking his shoes off, Drew fell back on his old bed, having eaten like the condemned man having his last meal. It seemed odd to be home without his dad there, and he felt uneasy and sad. He hadn’t realized that he was so hungry until he’d started eating, and now, he was tired and sleepy. His mother had always said that he was like a little pig – as soon as his belly was full, he was ready for a nap. Within a minute of his head hitting the pillow, he was out. He wasn’t aware of anything, no dreams, no noise in the house, nothing until he heard his loud-mouthed brothers come into the room.
“Well, well, well. Is that the famous author come to our lowly little town, brother? Maybe we can have a sign made that says DREW HARRISON SLEPT HERE.” That was smart-ass Mark.
Then, Paul. Another jackass. “I do believe it is. He sort of looks like the guy on the back of the books.”
Drew opened one eye and asked, “Could I help you gentleman with anything?”
Paul spoke up. “Yeah, Mom told us to come and wake you up so that you can get ready to go to the funeral home with us.”
“What time is it?” Drew rubbed his face with both hands, now having both eyes open. God, he felt like he’d been hit by a truck. All he wanted to do was sleep, escape, but that wasn’t going to happen.
“It’s four-thirty and we need to leave by five-thirty because we need to be there a few minutes early. Do you think you can be ready, hotshot? We’re taking my car,” Mark said.
“I can be ready, and by the way, it’s really great to see you two again too,” he said sarcastically. “Now, get out of here and let me get dressed.” They left, shooting him a dirty look. Some things just never changed.
