Melisent sat warily on the edge of the bed, clutching her dagger and candlestick, her palms moist with sweat. Branok stood utterly still, focused on the locked cabin door. They could hear the screams and cries of the living and injured as the fight between the English and French pirates went on and on. Her lips moved in a soundless prayer, praying that nothing had happened to Godwin.

If it had, she didn’t care if she lived or died.

More shrieks came as steel met steel. She could only imagine how many pirates had fallen in this battle upon the seas. She knew on land that men fought for their king and country and to protect their properties and families. These lawless pirates, though, fought for the right to claim superiority as they sailed the waters. It disgusted her—and yet she loved the very man who led Dragonstar’s crew against these Water Bearers. She thought to what Branok had told her about the brutality of the French pirates and decided men so cruel to innocents deserved death.

Noise from outside the door came close. The fighting proved fierce as Melisent heard men scream and bodies fall. Then it seemed to level off.

One side must be winning—but which?

A blow landed on the door. Then another. She knew men must be trying to break it down. Her belly lurched. That meant Godwin’s men had failed.

Instead of fearing what might come once the French breached the door, rage surged through Melisent. These Water Bearers had taken someone away from her that she’d only begun to care for. With Godwin’s death, she’d lost a chance to live and love. Now, vengeance filled her heart. Angry tears streamed from her eyes as she slipped from the bed and crouched next to it. She would let Branok begin the fight but she intended to spring unseen and enter the fray.

The door gave way. Two men pushed hard against it, moving the trunk out of the way as they burst in with swords drawn. A third man in a bright scarlet coat and a long scar down his left cheek stood behind them, interest sparking in his black eyes. As the first two engaged Branok in battle, the man stepped into the cabin.

“Branok Killigrew,” he called out. “I’d have thought you would be in the thick of the fight outside. What treasure are you guarding in your captain’s quarters?”

The man’s eyes swept through the cabin and landed on her. His grin was like that of a wolf cornering its prey. Melisent shivered.

“Ah, so Trenoweth flouts superstition and brings his woman to sea with him.” He licked his lips hungrily. “What a pretty whore you are, mon cher. I cannot wait to sink my teeth into you.”

Melisent didn’t reply. She clutched her weapons even more tightly and looked in Branok’s direction. Both French pirates lay dead at the quartermaster’s feet. He was breathing hard as he headed in the direction of the taunting man.

“You’re mine now, Bronnard,” Branok growled.

Their swords met and the fight between them grew fierce.
