Chapter Thirteen
"I just think we should talk."
The words couldn't get out of Diego’s head for the rest of the afternoon, and time passed slower than ever. Worse yet, when eight finally came, he still had no idea what to say to Ethan. They definitely needed to talk, it was the smart thing to do, but a part of Diego wanted to drive away and not come back, not until he remembered how to keep a professional distance from a client.
And nothing had even happened between them yet. Not really. There was tension, yes, there was that aborted kiss on Friday, but it wasn't like they were sleeping together or had a fling, or… God, Diego couldn't believe he was even considering using a word "relationship", here.
He handed the shift over to Logan, and pretended not to see the questioning looks from him and Torres, who headed upstairs with him to relieve Jeremy.
"See you tomorrow," was all Diego said to his partner, praying Jeremy wasn’t going to tell him off, especially with Logan there.
He got his wish, along with a slap on the back in goodbye, and then Jeremy was off and Diego was knocking on Ethan's door.
Seeing the man in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt short-circuited his brain the same way it had done the first time around, so he just followed Ethan inside without a word.
He closed the door behind him with a click that seemed particularly loud in his head, then hesitated in the middle of the hall, not knowing where to go. Frozen in indecision.
Ethan stood a few feet away and looked at him, steady and cool, and Diego wanted to know what his secret was. Was he as calm as he appeared to be? And what did it mean if he was?
"Do you want a beer? Or wine?" Ethan asked. "I have some water, too."
"Water would be great, thanks."
Ethan tilted his head towards the living room. "Go take a seat, I'll be right there."
This, Diego could do. He took a seat on the couch, close to the armchair that featured in quite a few fantasies he'd been having lately. He looked around to give himself something to do other than get lost in those fantasies, and he cataloged everything once again, this time from a personal perspective, not a professional one that focused on safety measures.
Aside from the armchair and the couch, the other furniture consisted of two bookcases bracketing the big TV on the wall, and a small table with two chairs near the window. There were no photos or art on the walls, but it didn't feel empty. More minimalistic than anything else.
Ethan was back with a bottle of water he handed Diego and a glass of red wine he kept for himself. He sat on the armchair, but immediately leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. Diego couldn't look away from the way he cradled the glass with his long fingers in the space between his legs.
He imagined these fingers cradling his head as Ethan directed him into a kiss, or maybe towards his cock.
