There is also the tale of the lone hiker who enjoyed going up to Devil’s Gate in the Sespe backcountry. On this fateful trip, he drove up Goodenough Road in Fillmore, and at the end of the road, there is a parking area for the hikers. He parked his jeep, removed his backpack and additional camping gear and led his dog, George, along the trail. Off they went toward Devil’s Gate. Along the trail, the hiker stopped to photograph the scenery and the pristine countryside. There was water throughout their trek, and he stopped to let George drink. They made it into the Sespe wild, and he decided to set up camp. After setting up the campfire, they relaxed and lay back to soak in the night sky. It had been a good day, and both had eaten dinner and dozed off for a bit. This lone hiker decided it was time to take cover in their tent. He put out the fire and packed up all the other stuff so they would be ready to hike to Devil’s Gate in the morning. He could see it off in the distance, so it wasn’t too far. He and George had been asleep when suddenly he was awakened by George’s loud barking. He tried to calm him down. George was persistent, and there was no calming him down soon, so he stepped out of the tent to see what was going on outside. Off in the distance, he saw some white lights—three circles of light that were moving toward him. He had never seen lights like that out here in the wilderness, unless they were lights carried by other hikers. His intuition kicked in, and he decided to get back inside the tent. He and George were just waiting for these lights to disappear. At first, George waited next to his master, but then he started barking again. This time, the hiker peered out of his tent, and he saw the round white lights moving around much closer than before. They weren’t lights from a lantern or spotlight; they were round and dancing above the ground on their own. It was as though they had a life of their own. They were silent and bright. He had no idea what they were, but they were orbs of light. He became frightened since he could not explain this phenomenon. He zipped the tent up tight, turned off his lantern and snuggled with George until morning. He barely slept the remainder of the night.
