William O. “Buckey” O’Neill was a product of the western frontier. He was intelligent, colorful, flamboyant, and fearless. These attributes served him well as a newspaperman, politician, and sheriff of Yavapai County.

When Teddy Roosevelt began recruiting his Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War, the irrepressible O’Neill was among the first to sign up. The fearless tenacity that made him a favorite son of the Arizona Territory led him to the front lines of most major battles in Cuba as the captain of Company A.

O’Neill’s motto was, “An officer should always set an example to his men.” It was also his epitaph.

Despite exposure to enemy fire that felled several officers in the battle of Las Guasimas, he left the field unscathed. In smaller skirmishes, his bravado and luck again delivered him from harm. A sniper’s bullet in the battle of San Juan Hill ended his audacious career and lucky streak. An imposing statue of O’Neill on horseback dominates the courthouse square in Prescott.
