Who Gets a Secondary?

Some medical schools send secondary applications to only a fraction of the applicant pool, while other medical schools send secondary applications to virtually all applicants. What does it mean if you have received a secondary? If the school “prescreens,” then you know that you have been found to be academically competitive and are somewhat comparable academically to the other applicants also receiving a secondary. If the school does not prescreen prior to sending out secondaries, the fact that you have received one doesn’t tell you much. If you want to determine your statistical chances of receiving an interview after receipt of a secondary application, it is possible to do so by comparing the number of applicants receiving secondary applications to the number of applicants receiving an interview at any given school; you can find this information in the School Profiles section of the MSAR.
