How unfortunate the weather had turned against his proposed liaison with the delightful Miss Darcy. Two whole days of foul weather whilst at Chatsworth, and then his return to London had meant two days on the road and a day wasted sitting around awaiting the medical officer’s verdict. Although his visit to town was intentionally short and for medical assessment, there was little doubt his commanding officer had seen for self he was unfit for duty without confirmation from the medical officer. But as with all military proceedings notes were written, notes were handed back and forth and the final verdict his leave was extended. And here he was back in St. James Square a longed for glass to hand and supping the best of Madeira Port due to shortages of French Brandy. Bloody Napoleon.

What to do with his time that was the question. Cavendish had returned to London too, though had suggested if he wished to pursue Miss Darcy, then Chatsworth was available. For some reason Cavendish was bent on refurbishment of Hardwicke Hall, in fact, had fallen in love with the place. But to calmly take up residence at Chatsworth with the master absent seemed a damnable cheek, and yet, father had stayed on to pursue Lady Belle Sanders.

Perhaps a return to Derbyshire was a sensible notion, for as Cavendish had suggested— ‘Return to Chatsworth and you can take those two blue Dane pups off my hands. They’ve become rather attached to you, and I would rather see them go to a man they respect than the devilish hand who bid on them’.

He was sorely tempted, sorely tempted to take up Cavendish’s offer, and he had indeed come to appreciate the companionship of the pups whilst exercising his leg. There was marked improvement, a few strides more achieved each day, and the day would come when he would return to his regiment. There was talk of a second posting overseas to swell Wellesley’s forces, thus time with Georgiana would be precious too. Even stolen time if that’s all it could be for the present.

Though given Lady Belle Sanders warning, to the effect, Georgiana’s brother was overly protective of his sister, and given Georgiana’s account of prior foolishness, perhaps covert meetings were best avoided. Albeit communication could be limited to mere correspondence, he would live with that arrangement. Not altogether ideal, but needs must when circumstances were anything but favourable, and perhaps he ought to push on north over the border and enjoy the comforts of his own property.

Mental frustrations aside and there were plenty, not least the fact he hadn’t paid visit to his Scottish estate since he and Sophia had travelled there in company with a large rowdy party of guests almost three years past. Admittedly that was prior to his shipping to Portugal, and throughout his time there he’d received but one letter from her. On his return the truth was realised, and no more to be said or thought on the subject of wild sexual romps indulged beforehand.
