THE GAME OF MY LIFE

BY FERGUSON JENKINS

The year I won the Cy Young Award, I had about 27 RBIs on 20 hits. The game against Montreal I hit two home runs and knocked in three runs. I hit a two-run homer and a solo homer.

I hit the first home run off Bill Stoneman, and then I hit the second one off Jim Britton, who came on in relief. I drove in enough runs to win the game myself that day, and held them, too, to just six hits. It was a lot of fun sitting on the bench that day. I had pretty good success against Montreal usually, but they had a decent team back then with Mack Jones and Rusty Staub.

My teammates razzed me a little bit about being a hitter, but I had already hit a couple that season. That year I hit six home runs, so that was a phenomenal year, and I was so happy.

I hit the first home run in the fifth inning, and Johnny Callison scored on it. Stoneman also played for the Cubs. I hit another one in the seventh after Britton came in. He was their third pitcher. I ended up 2-for-3, with two runs scored. That was one of my best hitting days.
