Chapter 19: …it pours

The next morning, Michael wanted to fly back without the team, so he chartered a private jet back home. He tried to get drunk on the flight, and I cautioned him about drinking alcohol while taking pain meds, but he didn’t listen.

“Doc, I need my girlfriend and not a lecture.” He poured himself a shot and took it to the head.

“I’m not giving you a lecture. There’s a reason you don’t mix the two.” We sat next to each other, his injured knee propped on the seat in front of him. When he poured another shot, I grabbed his arm. “Michael, please stop.”

He gave me a smack on the lips in an attempt to distract me. “I really don’t give a fuck right now what happens to me.” He leaned over me and kissed me again, using his tongue, and I could taste the alcohol.

“What does that mean?” I still held tight to his arm.

“My knee is fucking busted and my career may be over because of some bitch ass. So right now, I don’t want to feel shit.” He tried to loosen my hand. “Zoe, let my arm go.”

I fastened my other hand around his bicep. “No, Michael. I’m not going to let you drink yourself into a stupor.”

He jerked his arm from my hands, making me almost hit the window of the plane. “Fuck...”

“Were you about to tell me to go fuck myself? God knows I’m sorry this happened to you, but you won’t curse me out and disrespect me. That’s not happening.”

He glared at me before rotating his head around, stretching his neck muscles. “Damn, Zo. I’m tired of you not giving me credit. I wasn’t going to curse you out. I was about to tell you that I’m not trying to get drunk. I just want to relax.”

I felt bad because he was right. Once again, I thought the worst of him and he had not given me a reason to think that way. “Okay. One more shot and I’m not playing,” I conceded and kissed his cheek to pacify him. He was hurting deeply right now, and I wanted to be there for him. “Baby, I know you’re feeling all kinds of ways right now, but drinking is not going to solve your problem.”

“Here.” Michael gave me his bottle of Patron without taking a shot. “I’m just so pissed, and I can’t do anything about it. I don’t know who slipped up and let that muthafucka get in. I have never been hurt and then to let him, of all people, sack me like that...”

“Michael, don’t be mad at your teammates. I’m sure they feel horrible enough. You’re their captain. There is no time for blame and division. They still need you whether you’re on the field or off.”

He sighed deeply, looking less angry. “I should have known he wouldn’t stop until he got me, especially because we kicked their ass. I know to pay attention to who’s coming after me and I didn’t, plain and simple.
