Use Homework and Television to Your Advantage
Homework should promote cooperation and communication among the teacher, student, and parent. It should help the child develop responsibility and independence, master a skill, and understand what has been taught. It should also encourage children to learn new things and keep parents informed about what their children are learning in school (Kuykendall, 1987).
Given the anticipated benefits of homework and television, teachers can make these activities more powerful experiences by:
⢠Giving students homework projects that can involve members of their families (for example, creating a family tree, assessing family strengths and virtues, and writing fictional stories that feature family members as heroes or heroines)
⢠Giving students homework assignments that incorporate their strengths. A student athlete who has difficulty reading might be asked to make an oral presentation in which he or she speculates which team might win the NBA Championship, Super Bowl, or World Series after reviewing and analyzing newspaper stories on professional sports teams and developing his or her own logical conclusions
⢠Allowing students to watch television programs they normally watch, even though such programs may be considered negative. Students can write a paper on what makes such programs inappropriate and what negative values those programs convey
⢠Giving students assignments that require viewing more documentaries, educational programs, and programs that address current issues
⢠Giving students homework assignments that will help them learn more about diverse cultures and races
⢠Giving students homework assignments that enhance character development and an understanding of such attributes as honesty, integrity, compassion, tenacity, tolerance, persistence, and resilience
