Chapter 27

Kyle

It was a city unlike his own—quaint stone cottages, unpaved streets, and people dressed in strange clothes. There were no high-rise towers, no troop cruisers flying overhead, no maglev train whining past. And no smog.

The streets were crowded, and Kyle kept getting jostled. Within the crowd he saw a man who looked familiar. His dad? Yes . . . only he wore the same strange garments as those around him, and his hair was unusually thick and unkempt. He was unshaven and had tanned, weathered skin. Clearly this wasn’t his father after all, but the resemblance was striking.

A pale aura rose up from the man’s back and shoulders, shrouding his head like a ghostly hood. It was an apparition of some kind, a humanoid creature unlike anything Kyle had seen before, with tusks and tiny eyes, and an expression that radiated anger and hostility.

Staring in amazement, Kyle slowly became aware that the surging crowd was getting rougher by the second, bumping and pushing him as they passed, causing him to jerk and sway from side to side . . .
