The Cosmic Ledger

It is the petty man of dim-witted vision who retorts, “But I’ll be dead, who cares what my ‘legacy’ will be if I’m not there to appreciate it!” Legacy is not about your petty ego, though; it is not about you; your legacy is not for you. Matters of legacy are concerned, ultimately, with the notion that what you do in life etches itself into the very fabric of the universe – irreversibly, irrevocably, and forever: nothing goes unrecorded in the cosmic ledger of eternity.

A molecule of water that splashes into an ocean fundamentally alters the structure of the entire ocean. The water molecule, the instant that it hits the mass of water, immediately alters the condition of the other molecules that it physically hits. Those molecules, in turn, microscopically bounce and bump and gyrate into the molecules surrounding them, fundamentally altering their course as well – and so on, in a cause-and-effect wave that eventually cascades across the entire ocean. The influence that a drop of water has on the ocean as a whole is almost infinitely small, yes, but importantly it is theoretically measurable. A single molecule of water leaves a legacy that changes the composition of the entire ocean.
