Another issue that needs attention is understanding the scope of indexing in online databases. Often, databases are labeled with a very broad title, such as “Marriage Records of South Dakota.” But if one reads the description of the database, it turns out that only certain counties in the state of South Dakota are included and only for very specific, varying time periods. Just as it is prudent to read the prefaces of print reference sources, it is also prudent to carefully read the descriptions of databases. Make sure patrons access this information to help them make sense of why or why not they have success searching the database.
