CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
RAFFA gasped. A bear? The girl who had tamed a Forest bearâthat was Kuma?
It was Garith who found his voice first. âI canât believe it! Is it really tame? How did you do it?â
âNo,â Kuma said. âSheâs not tame. Sheâs a wild bear. The Forest is her home.â
Ansel looked at Kuma, his eyes bright with admiration. âWe heard the rumors,â he said, âbut I never dreamed they could be true. What an amazing thing youâve done.â
Kuma bowed her head at the compliment and seemed to relax a bit.
âPlease tell us more,â Ansel said.
She was silent for a moment. âI was only four years old,â she began slowly. She went on to tell of a family outing to a meadow near the Forest. She had strayed away from the group and gotten lost. It had started to rain, and despite a frantic search, no one heard her cries as she wandered about for hours, wet, cold, alone, frightened.
âThen this huge bear came out,â Kuma said. âFrom the trees. I was too little to know any different. I just ran straight toward her.â
âFaults and fissures!â Trixin exclaimed.
âI donât remember very much more,â Kuma admitted. âBut she must have taken care of me. They found me days later, in the same meadow. My family could hardly believe Iâd survived all those nights alone.â
She paused, then went on. âExcept I wasnât alone. As soon as I was old enough, I started going to the Forest to try to find her. And I finally did, when I was seven.â Another pause. âOr maybe it was she who found me. She made this lovely noise, âA-rooo, a-rooo,â so I called her Roo. Ever since then weâve spent . . . a lot of time together.â
âAmazing,â Uncle Ansel repeated.
âSuch a story!â Trixin said.
âBut where is she now?â Kumaâs voice quavered. âThey took her from the Forest in a wagon. To the Commons, I heard them saying.â She looked at Ansel. âPlease, will you help me find her?â
Raffa saw tears in Kumaâs eyes. He knew then that this bear meant even more to her than Echo did to him. His fear that Echo might be taken from himâKuma was living that very nightmare with the bear, and his heart ached for her.
Anselâs hesitation was so brief that Raffa thought he might have imagined it. âI know only that a bear was captured, nothing more. I will find out what I can.â
âThank you,â Kuma whispered.
âHas anyone sent word to your family? I should have asked earlier.â
She shook her head. âNo, itâs all right. They knowâI mean, Iâm often away from home, so they wonât be worried.â
That sounded odd to Raffa, and apparently to Ansel as well. âAre you sure?â he asked.
âIâm sure,â she said. âI live with my aunt and uncle, but I stay in the Forest a lot. Theyâll think Iâm there now.â
After a pause, she added, âThey have six children of their own. Theyâre not unkind but . . . itâs just easier for everyone when Iâm not around.
