The next morning, Griffin dug an old French press coffee machine and an equally old bag of ground coffee out of Kyrie’s cabinets. He coaxed the coffee into something drinkable as Kyrie focused on the dogs. Kyrie took them outside in two shifts, administered medicine, and fed them before he joined Griffin the kitchen. After a quick kiss, he fixed them breakfast and drove Griffin back to the bar. Griffin’s heart bubbled with happiness as they chatted during the ride and lingered in the parking lot for most of the morning laughing and joking like old friends.

Kyrie was, in a word, perfect. His boyish smile lit up Griffin’s insides, and his easy confidence excited everything else. Kyrie was sweet, but rough and strong at the same time, and he stopped Griffin’s heart each time their eyes met. The previous night had been somewhat of a test, and to Griffin’s surprise, Kyrie passed it. Now, he hated himself for even testing him.

Despite the teasing, the flirting, and the nudity, Kyrie didn’t pressure him for sex. Kyrie didn’t complain or make backhanded comments about the teasing, either. They cuddled the whole night, falling asleep mid conversation with Griffin’s arms wrapped around Kyrie’s big body. The morning was perfect, too. Kyrie woke before him, kissed him, and slipped out of the room, tending to his morning chores as Griffin eased out of bed and trudged into the kitchen. The old, stale coffee was a problem, but Kyrie wasn’t a coffee drinker. It made him more endearing.

After two hours of conversation, they parted ways, and Griffin drove home. His mother greeted him with a knowing smile. He shook his head and fell into his work for the day. He spent most weekdays on social media, growing a following with his massage techniques and tips. He had a website full of technique videos and a social media page full of massage students and clients chatting digitally about the practice. From his website, he made a steady but growing income. From his social media, he had gathered a collection of emails from various companies begging for a collaboration. His mother had received more than a few packages of massage oils and equipment from eager companies wanting the exposure.

In the small town, he averaged four clients a week, which gave him plenty of money for his slim expenses but left nothing in the way of savings or growth. He appreciated the simplicity, especially given his mother’s frequent doctor’s visits.

By the time Thursday rolled around, it had been five days without any contact from Kyrie besides a casual wave and a quick, brief text message. Griffin appreciated it, too, because he preferred the face-to-face interaction, anyway. He finished Thursday’s work early and wrung his hands as he waited at the library with a collection of unpopular strangers.

Kyrie arrived ten minutes late, but he arrived, and a wave of relief washed over Griffin. The man squeezed into a spot at the table and played game after game until the event was over and the library was closing.
