Macey read the card over twice before she set it down next to her food and laughed. He certainly had a good sense of humor and didn’t hesitate at all to poke fun at himself. She wondered if he would’ve given her the same nickname if she had met him around a different holiday.

Despite the fact that this lunch was far heavier than what she would normally eat this time of day, Macey ate every last bite, including the dinner roll she also found tucked inside of the bag, and the pie. By the time she was finished, her stomach felt as if it had expanded to twice its normal size and she was pretty sure she’d have to find some antacids. But other than that, she felt wonderful.

A glance at the clock told her it was time for Betsy to go home, so she hastily reapplied her lip gloss and cleaned up the mess, tucking Sam’s card inside of her desk drawer where no prying eyes might find it and then hurried out to relieve her friend.

When she approached the register, she saw Betsy talking to Mrs. Gregory and Mrs. Carpenter. “Great,” Macey admitted. “I might have to roll myself to my car later.”

Betsy giggled. “It was a lot of food, wasn’t it? But it’s nice to have a treat now and again.”

While Macey was hoping the women on the other side of the counter wouldn’t ask what they were talking about, it was inevitable that they would. “Did you have a special lunch today, Macey?” Mrs. Carpenter asked, a twinkle of curiosity in her eyes.

“Oh, it was nothing,” Macey replied.

“Nothing?” Betsy asked both eyebrows raised. “I’ll say it was definitely something….”

Before her employee could finish, Macey said, “Betsy, look at the time. Better hurry home. Will probably already has your lunch on the table.”

Betsy opened her mouth as if to protest, but a stern glance from Macey and she only muttered, “All right,” before turning back to the older women and saying, “it was nice seeing both of you. Have a nice afternoon.”

“You, too, Betsy,” each of them called, and Mrs. Gregory added, “take care, now.”

Macey turned to face the matriarchs, a smile on her face, as Betsy disappeared out the back. “Now, what can
